"The three-hour flight to Deer Lake Airport felt like an eternity. As the plane soared through the sky, my mind was heavy with emotions. I let the tears flow, unable to embrace the excitement of a new adventure. Instead, I grappled with doubt—had I made the right decision? I had left behind my family, my home, and everything familiar to walk into a future filled with uncertainty.

Arriving at Grenfell Campus, however, was not as daunting as I had imagined. Every staff member I encountered extended kindness, and my lecturers showed genuine interest in my experiences. They eagerly shared their knowledge, making me feel valued and heard. Yet, despite this warmth, the first few weeks were tough. Homesickness clung to me, an unshakable shadow. I longed for the comforting presence of my spouse and children, crying myself to sleep most nights.

But something shifted. Little by little, I began to see the beauty in my new surroundings. I made a conscious effort to embrace the positives. The breathtaking landscapes became my solace. The trees, dressed in their vibrant hues, swayed as if welcoming me into their embrace. I found joy in capturing these scenes, stepping outside just to marvel at nature’s artistry.

With time, I grew to appreciate Corner Brook in ways I never expected. The kindness of its people touched me deeply—strangers at the mall offered me rides, and a generous couple ensured I was well-prepared for the brutal winter. Even as I continue adjusting to the piercing cold, I carry their warmth with me.

The black community here is growing and thriving, fostering a sense of belonging for those of us far from home. Their efforts to build and uplift one another inspire me daily.

I have built meaningful friendships and connected with people who have shown me that relationships go beyond the color of my skin. I have been given opportunities based on merit to showcase my craft, without the pressure of constantly proving my worth. This brings me a deep sense of fulfillment.

Corner Brook has surprised me. It radiates beauty, not just in its landscapes but in the hearts of its people. Whenever I get the chance, I take in the serenity of the bay, watching the water dance against the backdrop of towering hills. I have come to affectionately call this place "The Land of the Frozen Mountains." It is here, in this unexpected corner of the world, that I am learning to make a home."
