Vocabulary:

Printmaking - an art-making process where an image or a pattern
is copied onto another surface, essentially a stamp!
Scraps - a small part of an item that’s a larger majority has
already been used.
On March 12th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at the Rotary Arts Centre, my workshop titled “Produce Printing” opens up a new dialogue on the issue of food waste, overconsumption, and environmental sustainability. I’ve come up with guiding questions for those participating in the workshop, "How can we make art using things around our home?" and "Is it possible to make wearable art out of food waste/scraps?", with these questions I hope participants will be more than interested in learning how to create using what is in their homes. With the idea of using the medium of printmaking to stamp vegetables and fruits onto a tote bag, the end goal of this workshop is to produce a practical wearable piece of art.
This workshop will serve as an introduction to printmaking, in hopes of evoking future interest in the other methods found in the medium, and introduce the foundations of art making (line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and colour) and open dialogue of personal interests, thoughts, and ways of production.

This opportunity to facilitate this workshop comes from a course, I’m taking in the last semester of my Fine Arts degree called Experiential Learning:
Community Engagement in the Arts, which I’ve chosen to be facilitated through the Rotary Arts Centre. For the past two months, I’ve been shadowing the lovely Sam Osmond, essentially my course liaison, where I’ve aided in weekly workshops, learned how to install and deinstall exhibitions that take place in the gallery space, and seen behind the scenes of a not-for-profit arts organization.
As a requirement of my course, I am tasked to plan and execute a community-based workshop of my choosing. I’ve had the idea for ‘Produce Printing’ for over a year now and finally have the opportunity to execute it! I hope this method of art-making peaks some interest!
About the artist :

Hannah Langille is an emerging Mi’kmaq and Settler artist from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Hannah’s art practice mainly consists of textiles and fibre arts, printmaking, and sculptural installations which she uses to explore themes of healing from past traumas, culture and traditional folklore practices, and how to be kinder to our bodies, the land, and the people who inhabit it. Soon to be graduating from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a BFA in Visual Arts in 2025, Hannahhas hopes to continue to work further on her practice, finding more out about the land, preserving it, and communicating that through art.
